Warm up            5 mins WE

Ask the young people if they ever think about the end of the world. Have they watched any films about it? e.g. Wall-E, The Day After Tomorrow, War of the Worlds, Pacific Rim. What do they think and feel about them?

Apocalypse            15 mins WE

Read Luke 21.5-19 aloud from The Message. Discuss with the young people the impact it has on them.

Questions to discuss

  • If you knew the end of the world was coming tomorrow, what would you do differently today?
  • If someone felt they had no future, what would you say to them in the light of this passage?
  • If someone asked why you are a Christian, what would you say?

Faithful endurance            10 mins W

Read and discuss a story about someone who has been persecuted for their faith. You could use Jesus Freaks by D.C. Talk. Alternatively, invite a member of the congregation to share their testimony of faithful endurance.

Turn it upside down            15 mins WA

2 Thessalonians 3.13 says: ‘Brothers and sisters, do not be weary in doing what is right.’ Read through the Ten Commandments together. Very often we can view them as a list of ‘don’ts’, but what about the positive side of being a Christian? Working in small groups, challenge the young people to come up with a list of 10 ‘do’s’ for Christians to follow. Share these at the end.

Preview songs on YouTube and buy/download online.

Cry Out To Jesus, Third Day
Keep Holding On, Avril Lavigne
Faithful, Brooke Fraser

Fitness circuit            15 mins+ WE

Do this in a large indoor area or adapt to fit your space. Lay out a fitness circuit using any suitable equipment, e.g. benches, hoops, skipping ropes. Time everyone doing the circuit and award a prize for the person who completes it in the fastest time. Fitness allows us to endure physical challenges. How can we stay ‘fit’ in our faith and so endure life’s challenges?

Quote it            15 mins WS

Find some quotes about endurance e.g. Collins dictionaryBruce Lee; Runloving.com.

Look at them together and discuss which one people prefer and why.

Using online concordances e.g. Bible Hub, find Bible verses containing the word ‘endurance’. Invite the young people to make posters individually or in pairs, using their choice of Bible verse.

  • How does this drawing speak to you?

  • What do you think the bird represents?

Don’t give up            10 mins ES

Read aloud the poem ‘Butt prints in the sand’  and have a time of silence for the young people to reflect on times when they have given up – on people, situations, dreams, God. You could play ‘Keep Holding On’ by Avril Lavigne (see Listen), and/or close with A prayer of thanksgiving on p.10.

We remember            5 mins ES

Today is Remembrance Sunday. How easy is it to ‘hang on’ in the face of war? During World War I, there was a truce on Christmas Eve 1914, when soldiers from both sides sang carols and played football together. Hold two minutes’ silence to remember all those who have died in war, and those living in a war zone or involved in combat today.

EA

This week ‘live as if Christ died yesterday, rose this morning and is coming back tomorrow’ (Martin Luther).
