Drama: You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it
A meditation sketch based on John 14.14.
You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
That sounds good, Lord!
That's my kind of gospel!
Let's think now…
I'll have a double chocolate chip cheesecake with extra cream
and a million pounds please.
pause
I'm waiting …
Mmmmm – it doesn't seem to be working.
You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
OK – let's try again. Maybe I missed off the name.
I'll have a double chocolate chip cheesecake with extra cream
and two million pounds please, in Jesus' name .
(You'll notice my demands have gone up slightly!)
pause
I'm still waiting…
How about without the extra cream?
Mmmmmm – still not working. This is more difficult than I had thought.
You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
OK – maybe 'in my name' means 'the kind of prayer I would have prayed'.
I don't think Jesus ever ordered the double chocolate chip cheesecake with extra cream or the two million pounds. What did he ask for? Come to think of it, I can't remember Jesus asking for things for himself. Maybe my prayer was a bit too selfish?
OK – let's try again…
Dear Lord, I pray for a double chocolate chip cheesecake with extra cream and two million pounds for my brother – perhaps he'll share it with me (oops! I didn't mean that last bit to slip out).
OK – give it a couple of seconds…
Now – let's phone him and see…
Holds mobile phone to ear. Hi bruv – anything odd just happened? … ermm can you see any cheesecake? … no … ah well – see you later … bye.
You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
I guess I was still thinking about me. I guess I would have to be able to think like Jesus to pray in his name – I'd need to learn how to think selflessly like Jesus did. That's a tall order. I'd need some help with that.
Lord, send your Spirit, teach me how to pray …
