Textual items on the ROOTS web site

Most of the content on the ROOTS web site is provided as text, which you can read, print, or copy and paste into your own material, such as orders of service or overhead projection slides. This page offers some hints and tips on how to get the best out of the textual resources provided.

Copying and pasting text into an order of service or other publication

To copy text from a ROOTS item and insert it into another document for use in a projection, order of service, or other publication, depending on your computer setup and the software you are using, you can:

  • Highlight the text with your mouse and drag and drop it into your document;
  • Highlight the text and choose 'Copy' from the Edit menu or via a keyboard shortcut (normally Ctrl + C in Windows);
  • Choose Edit - Select All and then choose 'Copy', to grab everything on the page you are viewing. Please note that this will grab all elements of the page, so it is best to go to the 'printable page', where available, as this is a simpler version without all the navigation buttons, and will produce a better, cleaner result.

Please note that, unfortunately, formatting such as bold and italics may be lost on copying text to another software program.

If you notice unusual formatting (for example, table cells) appearing when you paste your selected text into your other document, try using the 'Paste Special - unformatted text' option, if available from the Edit menu of your software program.

Saving a text item

There are two main ways to save the text of an item:

  • You can simply copy and paste the text into a word processor and then save it as a document.
  • You can use the 'Save As...' options available in your web browser. For example, recent versions of Internet Explorer offer a 'Save as type: Text file (*.txt)' option that will capture the text on the page and save it for you as a plain text file, though you will lose the formatting. Note that this option will also capture any text from the navigation on the page (tip: use the 'printable page' version of your chosen item to avoid this).

Changing the font face and size

When viewing and printing the web view pages - those with the navigation bar present on them - you can change the font size simply and quickly by changing your the settings in View / Text Size (within Internet Explorer 6 and Netscape 6; there will be similar options available in other browsers). However, you may not be able to change the font face chosen unless you have a browser that can override the web site's settings.

The printable version pages of all ROOTS textual resources can be further customised. They pick up on the font specified as the default in your browser. You can change this using the browser's font settings. Instructions are given below for a Windows PC using either Internet Explorer 6 or Netscape 6. The process may be slightly different on a Mac or in different versions of Internet Explorer and Netscape, but these steps should give you a rough guide as to where to look and what to do.

Please note that in both cases, as you are changing the default font, you may find that other web pages you view will also default to these settings.

In Internet Explorer 6:
Go to Tools / Internet Options... / open the General tab / press the Fonts... button / then change the Web page font to the font face that you wish to use. This will only affect the printable versions of the pages. To change the size of the font you need to go to View / Text Size and choose from the options available, for example Largest to make the text easier to read. The text size that you choose will affect all the pages, both normal and printable versions.

In Netscape 6:
Go to Edit / Preferences / then under Category, expand the Appearances list and choose Fonts / then change the size and face of the Variable width font to alter the font that will be used on the printable pages. If you want to, you can also select the box to Always use my font settings, overriding web page fonts, which will mean that whatever web page you view, the text will appear in the font face and size that you have specified. This will show up on both the normal and printable views of pages on the ROOTS site, and also on other web sites you visit. In addition, you can also use View / Text Size within Netscape to make a quick alteration to the size of text.

Tip on font faces: If you have them, Verdana (sans-serif) and Georgia (serif) are normally quite good fonts for onscreen reading (including as an overhead projection), and also work well when printed.

Getting the best results when printing text directly from the ROOTS web site

printable page buttonWhen printing an individual item of textual content, for example a fast response piece, a prayer or a drama sketch, use the printable version of the page for best results, optimised for A4 portrait paper.

The 'printable page' (reached using the button pictured) has been specially designed to provide you with the best results. It provides just the resource content, without all the navigation buttons and so on that appear on the main version of the page, saving on space and producing a better result. It has also been set up with a controlled page width that means it should print onto A4 portrait paper without further adjustment, and without words etc. being cut off at the edge.

You can also adapt the font face and size of the printable pages with more flexibility than you can the main pages.

To open the 'printable page' version of any item, just select the 'printable page' button pictured above, where it appears. The page will open up in a new window, and you can then print it in the normal way. Once you've finished, just close the printable page window in order to carry on browsing the web site.

Other tips

If your web browser has a print preview option, use it to check how the page will print.

It may be worth altering the page setup or print options in order to specify printing in landscape or portrait, depending on the page being viewed.

If you have a colour printer, but the use of colour is not important to the resource you are printing, you may wish to use your printer's options to specify the use of grayscale, in order to prevent wastage of coloured ink that would otherwise be used in order to print any coloured web links, icons, and illustrations. Please consult your printer software / manual in order to see how to do this.
