The ROOTS ethos
ROOTS' vision and mission
ROOTS’ vision is an environment of worship and learning in church communities in which people are encouraged, challenged, inspired and nourished.
ROOTS’ mission is to equip and resource churches of many denominations to enrich people’s encounter with God and support their response through worshipping and learning together in the midst of a changing world.
ROOTS’ values
ROOTS seeks to take seriously the needs of people young and old, whether believers or seekers, in many different contexts.
ROOTS recognises that the Bible is a key source of discovery for all Christian people on their journey of faith.
ROOTS draws on Christian tradition, current thinking and a broad theological understanding.
ROOTS seeks to reflect the diversity of our society by being sensitive to cultural differences and the use of language.
ROOTS recognises that Christian faith is above all expressed in community.
ROOTS realises its mission by:
- offering weekly materials for those leading worship and those facilitating teaching and learning in a diverse range of age-specific groups, through the ROOTS materials, ROOTS Adult & All Age and ROOTS Children & Young People together with the website, ROOTSontheweb.com
- using as its basis for the materials the ecumenical Revised Common Lectionary (which is closely related to Roman Lectionary, used by Catholics across the world, and to the Common Worship Lectionary, used by the Church of England), which provides a pattern for Bible reading in worship and offers four interrelated Bible passages for each week of the year.
- seeking through the resources to reflect that growth in the Christian faith is a journey. People quite properly find themselves at different stages on this journey: one set of marker points might be described through initiation descriptions – belonging, believing, behaving; another set of markers might be styles or stages of faith – experienced, affiliative, searching or owned.
- seeking to resource Christians, through their worship and learning, to reflect on their day-to-day lives in the world and to have a ‘living faith’ which responds to the needs of all people as part of God’s loving creation.
